Kayaking Background: I have been kayaking since my early teens. I grew up on a small Scottish island that gave me the perfect opportunity to sea kayak and surf continually, including multi day trips on the Atlantic coast and the Hebridean Challenge (a five day adventure race where I was the kayaker for team of five people). Since beginning Uni, I have become addicted to whitewater paddling and have paddled extensively in Scotland, when there’s water I try to get out every chance I can. Usually both days at the weekend and mid-week trips. In June this year I went to the Alps paddling every day in the Briancon area and managing to catch most of the classics e.g Ubaye Gorge e.t.c.
Previous trips: French Alps & various multi-day sea kayaking trips
Favorite destination so far: SCOTLAND
Nah paddling in France was awesome mainly for the guaranteed water levels and sunshine.
Extra Skills: My relevant experience also involves other sports. For example, I am a yacht-master and have completed numerous longer sailing voyages and so am used to performing under tough conditions. My climbing experience has given me ropework skills that I have found indispensable while kayaking. I am also a keen writer and look forward to article writing, post-expedition.
Other Interests: The list goes on and on, I am right into my sailing and also have been known to powerkite, climb and mountain bike. I also enjoy chilling… a lot… oh and a bit of partying (but only now and again
)
Music of choice: Oh, thats a toughy, like a bit of rammstein to get me psyched for a day on the water but at the moment Sublime, O.A.R and The Lowlife hardly leave my ears.
Most exhilarating boating moment: The same day as my worst boating moment, running Seven Dwarves on the Falloch, after recovering from an under-cut moment and swim earlier in the day, the word psyched doesn’t quite cut it
What has been your worst boating moment? Worst boating moment was definitely finding myself upside down in an under-cut on the Falloch and clawing my way out losing my blades in the process, makes me shudder!
When and where was your last swim? Awww, did you have to ask that? About a month ago, running the Monachyle Burn as it was rising fast, we read and ran all the hard stuff on the first section, then came a fairly easy grade 4ish and I flipped at the bottom bumped my head a multitude of times in fast flowing really shallow water; one bump too many and I pulled my deck. That’ll teach me to be complacent!
Most random / unusual thing you have ever done? Ooh, there’s quite a list, skinny dipping in the Firth of Forth at three in the morning, eating whale blubber, hitching a lift in the back of a campervan driven by a really drunk guy in the Czech Republic…
What are you most looking forward to about the expedition? I cannot wait to experience a new part of the world, very unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before, doing what I love doing best, boating! The challenge of first descents in potentially remote situations has me salivating just thinking about it!
What part of the expedition do you feel will be the biggest challenge? Logistics in a remote part of the world where we don’t speak the language…hand signals are always good though
Also obviously the paddling!
What will you cook when it’s your turn to feed the team? Ha ha, see next question.
What piece of kit will you be sure you take on expedition? The awesome campfire toastie maker a friend gave me as a random present, superb!!
What made you chose Siberia and Mongolia? This is an area that I have always been excited to visit. It has a remote feel to it and reading the Russian paddling book on the area made me sit up and take notice. The potential for exploratory boating and multi days seems big, in a beautiful and unspoilt part of the world, what more do you need?!
As a team, you have a lot to live up to after the success of the 2005 Kyrgyzstan trip. What do you think makes The Four Borders Expedition so special? We have the chance to build on what the Kayakstan trip achieved. We are a young, strong and motivated team with the chance to really achieve something in an area that very little is known about kayaking wise.
How do you think the team will get on since most of them only met for the first time in November? I have no doubt that were going to get on like a house on fire
We are all like-minded and outgoing and I felt a real click with every member of the team. It also helps that the way the selection worked out… my ideal team was chosen. I can’t wait to get to know everyone better.
